Apple’s Marketing Campaign Ignites Web3 Rumours

As Apple prepares to host its annual Worldwide Developer Conference, rumours surrounding the tech giant’s entrance into Web3 are beginning to spark. Although the company hasn’t issued any specific blockchain-related intentions, curious community investigators have stumbled across hints of an NFT essence within the promotional campaigns of upcoming Apple products.

The virtual conference is set to commence on June 6th, and will run through to June 10th. It’ll be free to view, with an array of leading tech experts and advocates expected to be in virtual attendance, as well as the showcasing of developments for new devices and software models such as the iPadOS 15, MacOS Monterey, watchOS 8, and iOS 15.

Speculation surrounding the tech powerhouse entering the new space arose after members of the MacRumours forum page discovered that by clicking on the Memoji characters, an augmented reality mode featuring three claimable trading card characters is revealed.

Although such Memoji characters are expected to be positioned as Web2 features, which coincides with Apple’s cultural affiliation for memes and mascot marketing, the community can’t ignore the fact that they resemble the avatars observed in RTFKT Studios’ CloneX project, as well as the animated cards of VeeFriends Season 2.

Whilst it’s accepted that Web3 elements will not be a feature of this year’s conference, it is thought that such resemblances may mark the primitive stages of Apple’s transition into blockchain ongoings.

To add fuel to the speculation fire, Apple’s transition into the new era of tech, or more specifically, the metaverse, will be more seamless than most, as it is has already experimented with developing a mixed reality headset with VR and AR functions, whilst its CEO Tim Cook also stated at Apple’s Q1 earnings call that it will invest accordingly in the emerging Web3 sector.
