75% of Metaverse Patent Applications Belong to Two Countries

According to Nikkei Asia, since 2016, 75 percent of patent applications related to Metaverse, virtual and augmented reality belong to companies based in the United States and South Korea.

The research evaluated Metaverse, augmented and virtual reality patent application categories around the world.

According to a joint study by Nikkei Asia and the research company Cyber ​​Creative Institute, US-based companies are among the world’s top 20 Metaverse patent applicants. US-based companies account for 57 percent of the 7,760 applications filed since 2016.

South Korean companies in the top 20 are in the second place with 19 percent, while Chinese companies take place with 12 percent. Japanese companies follow with 8 percent.

The survey addresses nearly 20 pantent categories in Japan, USA, Europe and Metaverse, augmented reality, virtual reality related markets.

LG Electronics, a South Korean-based and multinational firm , has filed the largest number of Metaverse patent applications since 2016 and continues to compete with local rival Samsung Electronics. Both firms introduced an innovation earlier this year that included NFT trading functions on their smart TVs.

US-based companies Meta, Microsoft, Intel and Apple also entered the list of top 20 Metaverse patent applicants, along with Huawei from China and Sony from Japan.
